The Agony and the Ecstasy

The Agony and the EcstasyJust the other day Christopher Schon, a friend from across the pond, left a comment on the Facebook Fan Page of A Life’s Work.

“When will this be out … ?”

Christopher is not the first, nor will he be the last, to ask this.

Sometimes I tell my inquisitor about a film I watched many times as a kid: Carol Reed’s The Agony and the Ecstasy.

Pope Julius (Rex Harrison) has commissioned Michelangelo (Charlton Heston) to paint the Sistine Chapel, and the Pope, apparently unaware that you can’t hurry art, keeps asking him, “When will you make an end?”
Michelangelo’s reply: “When I am finished!”

Don’t misunderstand, I’m not suggesting I’m Michelangelo and my film is the Sistine Chapel. I’m not even suggesting I’m Charlton Heston. But when will I complete  A Life’s Work?

When I am finished.

Next question.
